San Martino della Battaglia DOC

Friulano from the Lake Garda area, between the provinces of Brescia and Verona: a dry white and a Liquoroso from at least 80% of the grape known here as Tuchì. DOC since 1970.

San Martino della Battaglia: territory and history

The San Martino della Battaglia DOC is an interregional appellation, between the province of Brescia, in Lombardy, and that of Verona, in Veneto. It was born in 1970. It is small: about 17 hectares, with an output of 420 hectolitres.

A Friulano enclave

The Garda area where Friulano, the former Tocai, is grown was an ancient enclave of the Venetian Republic in Lombard territory, used for viticultural experiments. So the grape took hold in a very small area, which has kept this peculiarity over the centuries. Around it grows Turbiana, the grape of Lugana. Since the name Tocai can no longer be used for the grape, San Martino della Battaglia has taken back the old dialect name Tuchì.

The Bianco and the Liquoroso

The Bianco comes from at least 80% Friulano. The same applies to the Liquoroso, the fortified sweet version, which is very rare. The rules set no minimum ageing. The minimum alcohol is 11.5%. At the table the Bianco goes with broth soups, fried lake fish, frittata and vitello tonnato.
