The Colli Perugini DOC covers a hilly area between the provinces of Perugia and Terni, in Umbria. It was recognised in 1981 and offers whites, a rosé, reds, a sparkling wine and Vin Santo. The minimum alcohol is 11%, and the rules set no minimum ageing periods.
The whites
The Bianco is made from at least 50% Trebbiano Toscano and other white grapes, including Malvasia up to 10%. The varietals require at least 85% of the grape: Chardonnay, Grechetto, Pinot Grigio and Trebbiano.
Rosé and reds
Rosato and Rosso come from at least 50% Sangiovese, with other red grapes for the rest; the Rosso may also be Novello. The varietals, with at least 85% of the grape, are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese.
Sparkling wine and Vin Santo
The Spumante requires at least 80% Chardonnay, Grechetto, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio and/or Pinot Nero. The Vin Santo, dry or sweet, comes from at least 50% Trebbiano.
The Grechetto and the Bianco go with torta al testo filled with vegetables, frittatas and lake fish; the Rosso with cured meats, porchetta and grilled meat; the Vin Santo with dry biscuits. Umbria is also home to Montefalco, the Colli Martani, the Colli del Trasimeno, Assisi and Orvieto.
