Isola dei Nuraghi is an IGT, a typical geographical indication, of Sardinia, established in 1995. It has about 245 hectares, with an output of 33,200 hectolitres. It covers whites, rosés and reds, still or lightly sparkling, dry or sweet, as well as sparkling wines, wines from overripe grapes and passito wines.
The grapes
Isola dei Nuraghi uses the grapes allowed in the region of Sardinia. The Bianco, the Rosato and the Rosso come from these grapes, white or red, in any proportion. Wines with a grape name on the label must contain at least 85% of it. Girò, Nasco, Nuragus and Semidano are not allowed as varietals, and neither is Cannonau.
The styles
Besides the Bianco, the Rosato, the Rosso and the varietals there are the Novello, a red, and white, rosé and red sparkling wines. Among the dessert and specialty wines there are the Bianco and the Rosso from overripe grapes, that is from a late harvest, and the Bianco and the Rosso Passito. The rules set no minimum ageing, and the minimum alcohol is 9%.
The other appellations of the island
Cannonau has a DOC of its own, Cannonau di Sardegna. The island's other appellations include Vermentino di Sardegna, Vernaccia di Oristano and another IGT, Barbagia.
