Italian fortified wines: Marsala first and foremost, but also Vermouth and other traditions of wines fortified with added alcohol or mistelle.
Fortified wine is made with the addition of wine-derived ethyl alcohol, mistelle or eau-de-vie to reach 16-22% alcohol. The most famous Italian one is Marsala DOC (Sicily), born in the 1700s in the Trapani area of the same name from Grillo, Catarratto and Inzolia grapes.
There are dry, semi-dry and sweet Marsala, and ageing categories (Fine, Superiore, Vergine). Other Italian fortified wines: Vermouth di Torino (aromatised) and Aleatico di Puglia DOC.
