Expo Chianti Classico: over 60 wineries celebrate in Greve

Chianti Classico returns to the heart of Greve with over 60 wineries and around 200 labels to taste at the 54th edition of the Expo. On Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September the stands in Piazza Matteotti stay open from 11 am to 8 pm, alongside guided tastings, music and events dedicated to the territory.

Expo Chianti Classico 2026: what you will find in Greve

The heart of the event is Piazza Matteotti, where producers meet enthusiasts, visitors and trade professionals face to face. The Expo brings together wineries from the Florentine and Sienese Chianti and makes it possible to taste, in one place, wines from different estates and areas of the appellation.

The 2026 edition was scheduled from 10 to 13 September, but the opening ceremony was moved to Friday 11 because of bad weather. The stands nonetheless remained the operational centre of the event, which continues until Sunday evening.

For those who want to get their bearings in the territory before tasting, on WineAtWine we have already told the history and the zones of Chianti Classico, from the role of Sangiovese to the birth of the Gallo Nero Consortium.

High-altitude Chianti Classico: the tasting above 500 metres

On Saturday 12 September at 4 pm, in the Council Chamber of the Town Hall, the programme features “Il Chianti Classico di Altura”, a tasting dedicated to wines produced above 500 metres above sea level.

It is led by Luca Marchiani, AIS Master Sommelier – Chianti Classico 2025/26. The stated duration is around 50 minutes, the cost is 15 euros and there are at most 40 places available, by reservation.

The theme of altitude also directly concerns Greve: in the hamlet of Lamole there are vineyards that reach high elevations and give specific interpretations of Sangiovese. WineAtWine explored this aspect in its tasting of the Vigneto di Campolungo by Lamole di Lamole, with a vertical of Chianti Classico Gran Selezione and Riserva.

A “purple” Chianti Classico for Fiorentina's 100 years

The most unusual event of the Saturday comes at 6.30 pm with “Goal di Vini (in Viola)”, a tasting created for the centenary of Fiorentina football club.

The idea is to pair moments from the club's sporting history with Chianti Classico wines. It is hosted by David Guetta, director of Pentasport Radio Bruno, and Luca Marchiani. The session lasts about an hour, costs 15 euros and is limited to 40 participants.

The day also includes musical events in the historic centre, with the Attraroba Street Band and, in the evening, the Trio Radici in Piazza Vassallo.

Annata, Riserva and Gran Selezione: on Sunday the three types go head to head

On Sunday 13 September attention turns directly back to the structure of the appellation. At 3.30 pm a tasting is scheduled dedicated to the three types of Chianti Classico: Annata, Riserva and Gran Selezione.

The event makes it possible to compare, in a single tasting, the three levels of the Gallo Nero pyramid. The session lasts about 50 minutes and costs 15 euros. The booking page is currently sold out.

At 6.30 pm the programme continues with “Il Gallo Nero e i suoi abbinamenti”, a tasting of Chianti Classico and Vin Santo del Chianti Classico together with dishes from Greve's restaurateurs. In this case the planned duration is about an hour and a half and the cost is 25 euros.

How many labels can you really taste at the Expo?

It is the most useful figure for understanding the scale of the event: the 2026 edition brings together over 60 wineries and around 200 labels in the centre of Greve.

This does not mean that every wine is necessarily available at any moment, nor that the ticket for the guided tastings includes the samples at the stands: the programme distinguishes between events by reservation and the Expo's ordinary activity.

For those who come above all to get to know Chianti Classico in the glass, the most direct formula therefore remains moving from producer to producer in Piazza Matteotti, while the guided sessions allow you to focus on specific themes: altitude, classification, food pairing and, for one evening, even a hundred years of purple history.
