I love fiano.
An important white wine, complex, capable of aging.
I like Pietracupa: a winery born by chance, spontaneously from a simple love of wine, which over time has evolved and managed to build, be patient, and gradually produce excellent products.
The estate's rows of vines sit on the hill of Montefredano, where the soil is clay and limestone: the ideal habitat for fiano.
Rooted in tradition and attentive to what nature offers us, the people at Pietracupa have already received significant recognition, including internationally.
Today I am curious: I have been offered a young wine – very young indeed; let's try it!
Fiano d'Avellino 2013, deep and brilliantly bright straw yellow in color.
On the nose, slightly unripe white fruit and light florals.
On the palate, acidity – a lot of acidity – which makes me think of a deliberately early harvest. A very mineral wine, intense and fairly long-finishing.
The acidity leaves little room for anything else, it dominates: but note that we are not talking about a bad wine here, rather a promising young lad who will grow into a fine, strapping fellow!
A wine full of potential, already pleasant now but surely spectacular if you are patient with it. Treat it like a talent worth waiting for and nurturing with proper care: buy a few bottles and put them in the cellar for a few years – I am certain you will not regret it!
I, on the other hand, have regrets: the 2012 is now sold out and I did not keep even a single bottle; I will not make the same mistake again!
Today you can buy it at a good price of around 10–14 euros at a wine shop – it is worth backing young wines that will surely give us the right satisfactions as time goes by!
